The Mage Wars are a fading memory. The kingdoms of Malweir focus on rebuilding what was lost and moving beyond the vast amounts of death and devastation. For some it is easy, others far worse. Some men are made in battle. Grelic of Thrae is one. A seasoned veteran of numerous campaigns and raids, Grelic is a warrior without a war. He languishes under mugs of ale and poor choices that eventually find him locked in the dungeons of King Rentor. His only chance at redemption is an offer tantamount to suicide travel north with a misfit band of adventurers and learn the truth of what happened in the village of Gend. Grelic, suddenly tired of his life, reluctantly agrees and meets the only survivor of the horrible massacre Fitch Iane. Broken, mentally and physically, Fitch babbles about demons stalking through the mists and a terrible monster prowling the skies, breathing fire and death. What begins as a simple reconnaissance mission quickly turns into a quest to stop Sidian, the Silver Mage from accomplishing his goals in the Deadlands. The last of the dark mages seeks to recover the four shards of the crystal of Tol Shere and open the gateway to release the dark gods from their eternal prison. Grelic and his team are sorely outnumbered and ill prepared to deal with the combined threats of a dark mage and one of the great dragons from the west. Not even the might of the Aeldruin, high elf mercenaries, and Dakeb, the last of the mages, promises to be enough to stop evil and restore peace to Thrae.

The Dragon Hunters A History of Malweir Volume 2 Christian Warren Freed 9780692343012 Books

From the first page of 'Dragon Hunters', author Christian Freed effectively draws the reader into a captivating but seemingly predictable setting reminiscent of 'Lord of the Rings': at the request of their beleaguered king, a great yet disgraced warrior and a wise elderly mage nearing the end of his days embark on a perilous quest, early en route gathering an unlikely band to travel with them. As this group of mismatched and conflicted individuals sets off, the story sheds predictability. Through a series of harrowing adventures, Mr. Freed creates a dark fantasy world all his own, and a scary one it is - rarely have I read a saga in which hellish creatures and their chaotic environs were rendered in such successfully creepy reality.

Mr. Freed's long experience as a military man shines throughout. Warrior and leader Grelic directs his charges and deals with his own conflicts naturally and convincingly; battle scenes are presented with a writer's vivid imagination as well as a soldier's knowledge of tactics, artillery, and direct hand to hand combat. No character is left to linger in one-dimensionality; each has a compelling backstory, a mystically preordained role, and a singular destiny awaiting. The adversaries - goblins, dwim, trolls, a fearsome dragon - are also skillfully crafted and given their own distorted individuality.

No spoilers given. Fans of the genre and anyone wanting a page-turning and genuinely scary fantasy-adventure story, buy a copy of 'Dragon Hunters' - it won't disappoint!

The Dragon Hunters A History of Malweir Volume 2 Christian Warren Freed 9780692343012 Books Reviews

Close but not quite. Other than Dakeb there is no connection to the previous book. Didn't hate it but not thrilled.
This book was simply amazing. I love dragons and loved the descriptions and connection the writer had to each character in the book. This was my first read from this author and look forward to reading more books. Highly recommend giving this author a chance.
I wouldn't have guessed that a dragon was leading the goblins The original people from book 1 were missing and it would have been nice to include a great grandson of Darlek or one of the other original characters but it was great especially the strategy of the elf to wait until the dragon exposed his underbelly.
I wish I could give this book 4 and a half stars. Though this is Book Two in the History of Malweir, it is not really a continuation story from book one and can be read as a stand alone book. It does, however, make the story a bit richer to know a bit of the back story found in the book Armies of the Silver Mage.

In The Dragon Hunters Mr. Freed once again brings together a band of unlikely and flawed characters who find they must act together against great odds to save their country and the world they know. Fitch Iane is haunted by his failure to save his young wife during the destruction of their village, Brother Ibram, cloistered in a monastery, yearns to be a warrior, while Pregen Chur, a thief with a duplicitous nature, is drawn to the reward of the King's gold. The group leader is an aging but fierce Gaimosian warrior named Grelic with Cron, a loyal Captain of King Rentor's guard, providing stalwart support. Auburn haired, lithe and lethal, Kialla has known Grelic most of her life and was his first choice to join him on the mission set by the King. There are horrible monsters, battles, a dragon and then magic when Dakeb, an ancient mage joins them as their scouting mission becomes an urgent adventure to stop the evil Silver Mage from collecting a shard of the Crystal of Tol Shere, a powerful crystal that once whole again would allow the dark gods to return to the world of Malweir. In this journey the small band gets help from unlikely and unexpected sources that include the legendary elven Aeldruin with Faeldrin as their leader.

Mr. Freed weaves the parts of this tale together smoothly, keeping the story moving at a good pace. He uses his own military background to paint powerful battle images and then he moves on. With only a little background, he makes the reader care about the members of the band - to worry about them and want them to do the 'right thing'. He adds depth to the characters through their actions and his dialogue is very realistic. Mr. Freed is honing his writing and story telling skills with every book he writes. While this book retains some typographical and formatting errors, they do not interfere with this well-told story. His writing simply grows stronger with better control with each book he writes. I look forward to what comes next!
